          Why should I recycle my computer hardware and peripherals?

          Computer hardware and peripherals should be recycled for two primary reasons:

          - The materials in the products can be reused in the production of new products, minimizing the amount of material that goes into landfills and the need for raw materials. 

          - Some of the component materials must be disposed of or reused in a specific manner to protect the environment.

          If your packaging is not curbside recyclable, you may visit Earth911 to find a nearby location to recycle your packaging.

          Will I receive any kind of receipt of donation from Dell for tax purposes?

          You may receive donation receipts for tax purposes through our Dell Reconnect partnership with Goodwill®. Receipts are provided a drop off location by the charitable organization.

          Maybe. Many states have passed legislation regarding e-waste.

          Can you tell me more about the California State Environmental Fee?

        • A

          The State of California passed legislation instituting that a mandatory State Environmental Fee be collected for certain electronic products shipped directly from Dell to California. This law, referred to as the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003, requires manufacturers to collect a fee for these electronic products sold within or into the State of California.

          Dell Reconnect is a recycling partnership with Goodwill® Industries offering consumers throughout the United States a free and convenient way to responsibly recycle their used electronics.

          How does Dell Reconnect work?

          The process is simple:

          - Make sure Dell Reconnect accepts your item

          - Take your used technology, of any brand, in any condition, to a participating Goodwill drop off location.

          What happens to the equipment?

          In some locations, Goodwill employees determine if an item is able to be resold or recycled. If it is still useable, Goodwill will refurbish the item and sell it through their stores.

          What happens to my data?

          Dell’s approach to the handling of data storage devices returned to Dell and for any services carried out at your location aligns to the National Institute of Standards and Technology "Guidelines for Media Sanitization” (“NIST 800-88 r1”), and Dell will either:

          1. Sanitize the device (in accordance with NIST 800-88 r1 “purge” or “clear” methods) in preparation for reuse; or
          2. Destroy the device using physical shredding or other appropriate physical destruction methods (in accordance with NIST SP 800- 88 r1 “destroy” methods) when Dell elects not to reuse the device or when it is pre-sorted for recycling.

          What is Return to Dell?

          The Return to Dell program is a free service that allows consumers to mail in their used Dell computer equipment to be responsibly recycled through our partnership with FedEx.

          How do I ship my product(s) to Dell through Return to Dell?

        • A

          Please follow these steps:

          - Delete all data from your hard drive.

          - Complete the Shipping Label form and print your shipping label.

          - Drop off at a local FedEx location or call (800) Go-FedEx (800-463-3339) to schedule your pickup. Let FedEx know you would like to schedule a pickup for the Dell Package Return Program.

          Does Return to Dell provide packaging materials?

          In an effort to minimize impact on the environment, Dell does not provide packing materials. However if you reside in Maryland or New York and require packaging supplies for your eligible electronics, please send a request to US_CONSUMER_RECYCLING@DELL.COM.

          Is it OK to put more than one item in a box?

          Yes. You can put multiple items in a box as long as the weight of the box doesn’t exceed 150 pounds, and the maximum dimension for U.S. domestic packages is 108" in length or 165" in length plus girth. Girth is defined as two times the width plus two times the height (2xW + 2xH).

          What do I do about the data on my hard drive?

          You are responsible for all confidential data that may be stored on the products. Before you recycle a product, you are responsible for:

          -  Deleting the data on the hard disk drives and any other storage devices in the products

          -  Backing up or transferring any data prior to deletion

          -  Removing any removable media, such as diskettes, CDs or PC cards

          Do I get any kind of receipt confirming my hard drive was destroyed?

          Not through our Return to Dell or partner programs. However, you could through the Dell’s Asset Resale and Recycling Services.

          Dell’s Asset Resale and Recycling service provides an assessment of the residual value of all your old assets and on receipt we finalize the value and return it to you. Equipment with no residual value is recycled.

          Dell will handle the logistics of properly disposing of your excess business equipment in an environmentally sensitive way. During the process, IT components are broken down and separated into ferrous metals, precious metals and plastics and then sent to specific partners who specialize in the disposal of each unique material.
