HOPKINTON, Mass. - September 25, 2014 -
EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) announced that it has been recognized as a leader among S&P 500 companies by the environmental non-profit group, CDP, for the depth and quality of the climate change data disclosed to investors and the global marketplace. For the sixth time, EMC has been included in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) for its leadership in the quality of climate change disclosures.
In addition, for the fourth consecutive year, EMC has been selected as an index component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America as a result of its ongoing progress on sustainability initiatives.
As an IT provider, EMC recognizes the importance of transparency in setting and disclosing science-based goals and providing our customers with technology that can serve the demands of data growth in ways that are both cost- and energy-efficient. Through alignment of corporate strategy with aggressive mid-term and long-term emissions reduction and renewable energy targets, EMC strives to minimize our climate change impacts across the value chain.
EMC, earning a score of 100, achieved a position in the S&P 500 2014 CDLI, which spotlights companies listed on the Standard and Poor’s 500 Index (S&P 500) that have demonstrated a high level of transparency and data quality in their disclosure of information regarding climate change. High disclosure scores indicate the provision of robust climate data and a good understanding of corporate climate-related issues. The index includes companies in the top 10 percent for disclosure scores, and EMC is one of sixty-three S&P 500 companies featured in the 2014 CDLI.
For the fourth consecutive year, EMC has been selected as a component of the DJSI North America, thanks to its focus on sustainability initiatives. The RobecoSAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment is an in-depth analysis of a corporation’s economic, environmental, governance, and social platform.
The DJSI follow a best-in-class approach, including companies across all industries that outperform their peers in numerous sustainability metrics. RobecoSAM invites more than 3,000 publicly traded companies, including 800 companies in emerging markets, to report annually on their sustainability practices.
Paul Simpson, Chief Executive Officer, CDP
“Global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, and we face steep financial risk if we do not mitigate them. The need for disclosure of corporate climate change impacts and strategies to reduce them has never been greater. For this reason, we congratulate those businesses that have achieved a position on CDP’s S&P 500 Climate Disclosure Leadership Index. These companies are responding to the ever-growing demand for environmental accountability and helping to inspire others to follow suit.”
Guido Giese, Head of Indices, RobecoSAM
“Sustainable business practices are critical to the creation of long-term stakeholder value in an increasingly resource-constrained world, and we applaud those companies that are executing well on carefully considered sustainability strategies.”
Kathrin Winkler, Senior Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, EMC Corporation
