EMC Corporation announced today that it appears as No. 32 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA's) National Top 50 list of the largest green power purchasers—the company’s first time being named to the list. EMC® purchases 175 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, enough green power to meet 31 percent of the organization's U.S. electricity use. The company buys renewable energy certificates (RECs), demonstrating a proactive choice to support cleaner renewable energy alternatives.
According to the U.S. EPA, EMC's green power purchase of 175 million kWh is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of nearly 26,000 passenger vehicles per year or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of more than 18,000 average American homes annually.
Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydro. Purchases of green power help accelerate the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector.
In addition to EMC’s spot on the EPA’s National Top 50 list, EMC also appears as No. 18 on the EPA’s Fortune 500 list – ranking the annual green power use of leading Green Power Partners. Its green energy use also qualifies EMC for EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club, a distinction given to organizations that have significantly exceeded EPA’s minimum purchase requirements. Green Power Leadership Club members must purchase ten times the partnership’s minimum requirement organization-wide.
“EMC’s green power purchase program is an important facet of our sustainability roadmap. We believe that purchasing green power sends a message to our partners, customers, and employees that supporting clean sources of electricity is not only a sound business decision, but also an important choice in reducing climate risk. We are honored to be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.”
