Press Release
October 23, 2012
HOPKINTON, Mass. - October 23, 2012 -
EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced that Chilean state-own Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, has implemented EMC® Documentum® Engineering, Plant, and Facilities Management solution (EPFM) to securely access, manage, share, and transmit mission-critical engineering content across the organization and its global network of suppliers. By standardizing on EPFM, Codelco has increased operational efficiencies and enhanced collaboration while minimizing risks.
As the world’s top copper producer, Codelco manufactures approximately 1.6 million tons of fine copper per year and holds 20% of the world’s copper reserve. With 18,000 employees and an aggressive copper mine expansion strategy, Codelco needed a centralized information management solution to better manage complex design, engineering and construction projects; boost the efficiency in existing mines and ensure on-time project delivery while meeting compliance with relevant environmental, health and safety regulations. Codelco also needed to ensure that information management best practices could be re-issued time and time again as they expanded operations.
Codelco turned to EMC and selected EPFM for its easy deployment and low total cost of ownership. With EPFM, Codelco has improved operational efficiencies, and achieved greater collaboration across the enterprise and with external suppliers by providing secure access to project-related information and automating core business processes. In addition, Codelco eliminated the risk of misfiling or losing project data while reducing time to retrieve critical engineering documents from hours down to minutes.
Eugenio Gómez, Technology Platform Director, Projects Vice-Presidency, Codelco
“During large engineering and construction projects, it is critical to have immediate access to project and engineering information as individuals across the globe - employees, subcontractors and vendors - must collaborate on the creation, review and approval of a wide variety of project and engineering documentation. With Documentum EPFM, we are securely and effectively creating, sharing, maintaining large volumes of engineering-related content that is critical to the entire asset management lifecycle. As a result, we have streamlined approval and transmittal processes, enhanced collaboration, gained user acceptance and developed best practices.”
Documentum EPFM is a fully-configurable solution designed to address common challenges faced by energy plants, engineering and construction companies and facilities teams within large enterprises, namely misplacement and/or loss of critical project data, lack of collaboration and content sharing, and high risk due to non-compliance. The solution combines industry best practices with the enterprise-level capabilities of EMC Documentum and an architecture that enables tight integration with existing systems such as CAD and project management software.
EPFM offers various deployment options – on-premise, off-premise or both. For off premise deployment, EPFM OnDemand delivers a high value purpose-built application as hybrid-cloud managed service. Many projects can be resource-intensive over short periods of time, making the delivery of this capability as a cloud-based service especially compelling for lowering the total cost of ownership and accelerating project initiation and completion.
The EMC Documentum EPFM solution as well as other solutions from IIG and its partners will be on display at Momentum, the IIG European Users Conference, November 5-8, 2012 in Vienna. For more information, please visit: http://www.momentumeurope.com.
