Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust Journeys to the Cloud with EMC Symmetrix VMAX

Hospital selects EMC Symmetrix VMAX with Fully Automated Storage Tiering to help manage 52 per cent growth in patient data

    LONDON, UK - October 20, 2011 -

EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced that Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust has selected EMC's Symmetrix® VMAX™ and Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools (FAST VP) solutions to form the foundations of its Private Cloud environment.

    Customer Benefits:

    • Access to information any place, any time — VMAX will form the foundation for medical staff to make accurate medical decisions, and provide the ability to implement systems capable of supporting patient care on any computer in the Trust
    • Increased performance and availability — VMAX’s high availability design will enable the Trust to quickly and securely access electronic patient records without compromising system performance, without any down-time.
    • Improved efficiency — Implementing VMAX will result in increased cost savings, allowing budgets to be reinvested in further IT infrastructure projects improving the capability of the IT function within the Trust
    • Increased scalability — VMAX is architected for massive scale out without disrupting performance in the virtual data centre

The Trust needed an IT infrastructure to support its transition to a more efficient patient care environment. The increase in electronic medical records - such as medical histories and scans - had led to a steep increase in storage demands, with the Trust seeing a 52 per cent growth in patient and corporate data in the last year alone. The scalability of VMAX will effectively manage the increase in medical records and storage demands that the Trust envisages for the future.

James Norman, Director of Information Management and Technology at The Trust, said: "EMC VMAX is a key tool in our private cloud armoury, allowing our medical staff to quickly and securely access patient records no matter where they may be, ensuring the right care is delivered at the right time. Patient care is our number one priority and VMAX offers the industry's best availability."

The Trust's investment in the VMAX is also enabling other IT initiatives. The Trust is working on a virtual desktop infrastructure initiative, to be hosted in its private cloud, which will allow clinicians to access session assistance and patient records from any desktop on the hospitals' network, without having to log on and off. It will trial the 'Follow Me' technology - which enables this 'access-anywhere' in real-time - in its emergency departments, which have a very high turnover of patients and where staff need to be able to access medical records instantly from multiple desktops.

James Norman continues: "VMAX is playing a vital role in the future of the Trust's Information Management & Technology strategy. The efficiency savings offered by VMAX’s intelligent management of data placement and allocation with Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools (FAST VP), as well as the performance increase, is seen as the lynchpin to a number of key IT initiatives.

"One of the main reasons why we chose EMC is that we're able to scale up our storage with guaranteed high availability without losing performance. This was a key component when comparing VMAX with solutions from its competitors. Although good, those alternative offerings could not give us the same levels of performance when used for different types of data use.

“When dealing with patients, our staff need instant responses to their queries: they don’t have time for a four- or five-second delay between clicks or requests; they need an instant response. VMAX enables intelligent management of patient data across all hospital sites, making it quicker and easier to access information and get new services up and running," concluded Norman.
