EMC Data Domain Named Backup Hardware Product of the Year

Data Domain Global Deduplication Array with DD Boost Takes Gold in Storage Magazine-SearchStorage.co' Product of the Year Competition

    HOPKINTON, Mass. - March 09, 2011 -

EMC® Corporation (NYSE:EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced that the EMC Data Domain® Global Deduplication Array (GDA) with DD Boost was named "2010 Product of the Year" by the editors of TechTarget's Storage Media Group. A panel of judges comprised of the Storage magazine-SearchStorage.com editorial staff, in conjunction with a team of users, industry experts, analysts, and consultants bestowed the prestigious "Gold Award" upon the Data Domain GDA in the Backup Hardware category. This year's award marks the fifth time in the last six years a Data Domain deduplication storage system has captured a product of the year award from the TechTarget publication group.

Shane Jackson, Vice President of Marketing for EMC's Backup Recovery Systems Division said, "The Global Deduplication Array with DD Boost is truly a ground breaking product, and this award further reinforces what customers have already been telling us about the GDA. The Data Domain product architecture enables rapid scaling of both throughput performance and capacity. Since submitting for this award just four months ago, the GDA's performance and capacity have already doubled."

The latest version of the EMC Data Domain GDA, which was announced in January of 2011, ingests and deduplicates data at a rate of up to 26.3 TB/hr (7,300 MB/s), making it the fastest dual controller deduplication system in the world. Logical capacity of up to 28.5 PB and new support for VTL over Fibre Channel further expands the number of user environments and supported backup applications, such as TSM, that the GDA can address.

    Accolades from the Judges

    • "With users continuing to deal with explosive data growth, data deduplication vendors have to push the scalability and performance of their products to keep up with that growing demand. The EMC Data Domain Global Deduplication Array (GDA) with EMC Data Domain Boost has delivered on that promise. Our judges were impressed with the product's superior performance."
    • "The GDA eases management because its global namespace minimizes the need to reconfigure complex backup policies, while it dynamically load balances policies for performance and capacity management. It supports replication for up to 270 remote sites."
    • "Analysts describe Data Domain Boost as a clever piece of software that helps to make the backup server more efficient."
    • "It's fast and getting faster," one of the judges noted.
