Leading Health Insurer Saves Millions of Dollars in Paper, Printing and Mailing Costs While Reducing Environmental Impact
HOPKINTON, Mass. - March 18, 2009 -
EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced that Independence Blue Cross (IBC), a leading health insurer, has been named by Celent as a 2009 Model Carrier.Celent, an independent research and consulting firm focused on the global financial services industry, recognizes "model" insurance carriers each year for best practices in their use of technology.Using EMC Document Sciences® xPression® software suite, IBC enabled its 3.4 million members to access their benefit booklets online to reduce paper, printing and mailing costs, according to the report "Celent Model Carrier 2009: Case Studies of Effective Technology Usage in Insurance."
"IBC was chosen as a Celent Model Carrier because it effectively used technology to automate a paper-intensive process, which resulted in significant cost savings," said Jeff Goldberg, a Senior Analyst at Celent who authored the report."We also liked that this initiative has a substantial environmental impact in reducing the amount of paper IBC now uses in communicating with its customers."
During the past year, IBC made the decision to stop automatically printing and mailing insurance benefit booklets to every member unless an individual specifically requested a hard copy. Using xPression, IBC was able to provide members with real time online access to their booklets in a secure Web environment.
