The Well Project Deploys EMC Interactive Content Management Solution to Share Information Globally

Healthcare Website Meets High-Demand Requirements for International Information Portal

    HOPKINTON, Mass. - April 01, 2008 -

EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC), the world leader in information infrastructure solutions, today announced that The Well Project is using EMC Documentum software to power its international information portal (IIP) to provide women with  HIV/AIDS information, research and treatment options.  The solution has enabled The Well Project to create an information infrastructure to provide concurrent information and real-time updates for its more than 70,000 monthly English and Spanish-speaking visitors across multiple portals.

“There’s nowhere near enough money in AIDS research to do all the things we need to do,” said Dawn Averitt Bridge, founder of The Well Project.  “And the money that is available is spent ineffectively and inefficiently.  We need to be smart in how we create, manage and deliver information, so it gets results on a global basis.”

Responding to the dramatically growing numbers of AIDS cases worldwide, The Well Project decided to take its Web portal beyond its original English implementation and deploy a Spanish site that could be updated in real-time.  However, simply creating a Spanish portal with the same content and quality as the original site wouldn’t have been as cost effective or productive for the five-person team at the nonprofit.

“Automation was important to our team,” said Bridge.  “There are only five of us at The Well Project and we want to ensure that our time is used on the most critical projects.  Worrying about our infrastructure shouldn’t be one of them.”

The ambitious long-term vision required The Well Project to implement a highly-sophisticated, but still cost-effective interactive content management (ICM) solution that would allow their infrastructure to expand and meet future needs, including localized content creation, management and hosting services, and support other media, including podcasts and streaming audio and video.

The Well Project chose EMC Documentum, as well as BEA WebLogic and Lionbridge Technologies Freeway applications, to build an ICM solution that would allow them to create, manage and deliver rich media communications across multiple channels, while automatically mirroring the content to the Spanish site.  This technology allows the Spanish portal and future foreign-language portals to stay current and consistent with the original site.

In addition to making more information available to women, physicians and families with support for multiple languages, the ICM solution also enables the organization to publish more localized content.  Its self-publishing tools allow anyone with valuable content to become a contributor and create localized content to address culturally-relevant issues.  And collaboration tools allow users to participate in valuable online discussion groups, while facilitating efficient internal communications for caregivers and patients.

In 2007, The Well Project received two prestigious awards, the Stevie Website of the Year and InfoWorld 100 Award, recognizing their state-of-the-art, industry-leading solution for delivering vital information to patients around the world.

“Our goal in creating this website was to make information about HIV and AIDS readily-accessible and usable for any woman who might need it,” said Bridge.  “These awards demonstrate the success we have had with our interactive content management solution.”
