EMC Launches Embeddable Documentum Platform for OEMs

Industr' First Embeddable Enterprise Content Management Platform Supports All Content Application Types

    Hopkinton, Mass. - November 20, 2006 -

EMC Corporation, the world leader in information management and storage, today launched the world's first embeddable enterprise content management (ECM) platform – EMC Documentum® OEM Edition – specially tailored for the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) market. As part of the new offering, OEMs will have access to a variety of EMC Velocity2 Technology and ISV Program resources to help them market and deliver ECM solutions to customers successfully.

Today's announcement advances EMC's position as the technology and market share leader of the ECM industry. Documentum OEM Edition enables software developers to rapidly and easily implement Documentum as the content management foundation for any type of application that handles content, from accounts payable and contracts management applications to vertical applications in life sciences, aerospace, financial services and energy. It offers the same unified architecture, compatibility and functionality – including security, scalability and support for distributed environments – as the EMC Documentum enterprise content management platform that customers have come to rely on.

Balaji Yelamanchili, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Content Management & Archiving at EMC Corporation, said, "Virtually every enterprise application today deals with some form of content: documents, XML, reports, electronic forms and more. Application vendors realize that building their own repositories and content platforms is very costly and can be a distraction to their core business. Partners use off-the-shelf databases for structured information, and similarly, their needs are better served by using an off-the-shelf content platform. Documentum OEM Edition enables OEMs to gain significant competitive advantage by reducing the R&D costs associated with designing a content repository and instead focusing more time on building applications."

Documentum OEM Edition contains a preconfigured version of the EMC Documentum Content Server and has the same functionality and API as the version sold to enterprise customers. The platform is suited to the needs of the host application and optimized for typical usage profiles in a resource-restricted environment. It also comes with a silent installer for easier embedding into the host application without introducing any new dependencies.

Partners who purchase EMC Documentum OEM Edition can also leverage a wide range of best-in-class programs for building applications and solutions integrated with the Documentum platform through the EMC Velocity2 Technology and ISV Program. Benefits encompass technical support, access to training, application interoperability testing and certification. Specific benefits are:

"Enterprises want their strategic technology vendors to support an ecosystem of services and solutions partners certified in developing CEVAs (content-enabled vertical applications) on stable, mature, and feature-rich repositories," said Toby Bell, Research Director at Gartner. "The leading business benefit of ECM is derived from retiring isolated custom code and independent silos and adopting a solutions framework that ensures a good support/upgrade path while delivering immediate value toward business goals."
