DS Waters Propels Performance and Management of Critical Financial Databases with EMC Information Lifecycle Management Strategy

Premier Bottled Water Producer and Distributor Leverages EMC DatabaseXtender Software and EMC Tiered Storage For Database Archiving

    Hopkinton, - September 20, 2005 -

EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management, announced today that DS Waters has deployed EMC® DatabaseXtender software for database archiving to maximize the performance of its mission-critical Oracle E-business Suite applications and to support its information lifecycle management (ILM) strategy. DS Waters was able to pinpoint the source of its data growth pain down to the specific application module and implemented DatabaseXtender Optimizer for both accounts receivable and general ledger. DatabaseXtender's intelligent, policy-based data movement capabilities enable DS Waters to better manage its rapid Oracle E-business suite data growth while dramatically improving accounting and customer service productivity through more efficient access to information.

Nikhil Sawant, DS Waters' Director, Implementation Services, said, "DS Waters services customers from coast to coast and processes hundreds of thousands of transactions per day. Consequently, our Oracle-based accounts receivable and general ledger databases experience tremendous data growth, which impacts performance, impairs productivity and jeopardizes our ability to service customers. EMC DatabaseXtender helps alleviate these pressures."

DatabaseXtender streamlines production databases by relocating inactive data to a more cost-effective tiered storage environment. DatabaseXtender performs the data relocation while maintaining all existing data relationships as if the data is still stored within a single production environment. Following data relocation, users continue to use native applications to transparently monitor, analyze and use data stored in both the production and historical databases.

In 2003, Groupe Danone and Suntory Water Group formed a joint venture named DS Waters, a leading producer and distributor of bottled water products in the United States. As a result, DS Waters merged multiple legacy systems to provide its customer service and accounting employees with efficient and seamless access to financial and customer information. To support its ILM strategy, DS Waters assessed its business and database processes and determined that active accounts receivable and general ledger data should remain on high-performance EMC Symmetrix® networked storage for 13 and 27 months, respectively. This information would then be archived for retrieval on EMC CLARiiON® networked storage, creating a tiered storage infrastructure for lower total cost of ownership of their applications environment. Ultimately, approximately 30 million database rows representing 400GBs of data are set to be relocated out of production.

"Previously, to address our rapid data growth, we would have had to develop our own custom application or purchase more hardware," said Sawant. "EMC DatabaseXtender provides users with transparent access to database information regardless of where it is stored."

EMC's software and hardware supports numerous other critical business processes at DS Waters. By enhancing access to information, DatabaseXtender enables DS Waters' customer service department to more efficiently respond to the more than five million phone calls received each year. DS Waters also built and relies on an enterprise-wide business application system based on Oracle eBusiness Suite 11i and EMC Symmetrix networked storage.

"We've been using EMC products for more than 10 years and they have always strived to deliver solutions to meet our needs," said Sawant. "For instance, when we began implementing EMC DatabaseXtender, EMC helped us define how to implement the product and connected us with the product development team to ensure our suggestions and requirements were heard."
