EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management, announced today a five-year indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract award with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). This will enable the USPS to maximize its existing 650TB EMC infrastructure and further extend its information lifecycle management (ILM) strategy to optimally manage and store information throughout its useful life, thereby lowering operational costs, improving data availability and ensuring the protection and availability of critical applications.
"We manage a complex environment with multiple servers and mainframes. Not only are we experiencing 200 percent storage growth in certain operations, but our storage environment is becoming increasingly layered," said USPS Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, Bob Otto. "In order to continue delivering data availability, scalability, and service level agreements, the Postal Service required an updated information storage and management solution to support the business continuity initiatives of this organization and EMC was awarded the contract."
The EMC infrastructure provides centralized storage for the USPS' website, postal tracking systems, financial, human resources and retail applications, and supports the mainframes and hundreds of servers located in datacenters in Eagan, Minn. and San Mateo, Calif. The initial $30 million award for EMC hardware, software and services will support the USPS Enterprise Storage Platform Requirement, an initiative to expand and modernize the USPS' storage infrastructure and provide for business continuity and disaster recovery planning for critical USPS business applications.

Through this agreement EMC Consulting will work with USPS to conduct a solutions assessment, and provide project management and design and implementation services. Additionally, the USPS will use EMC ControlCenter® to monitor and manage its extensive storage environment consisting of EMC Symmetrix® and EMC CLARiiON® networked storage products for its storage area network (SAN), EMC Centera for content addressed storage (CAS), and EMC Celerra® network attached storage (NAS). The USPS will also use EMC SRDF® and EMC TimeFinder® software to enable non-disruptive access to critical data, increase application availability and performance, and reduce scheduled downtime.
