    EMC Acquires Dantz Development Corporation

Acquisition Marks EMC's Continued Expansion into the Small and Midsize Business Software Market

    Hopkinton, - October 12, 2004 -

EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC ), the world leader in information storage and management, today announced the acquisition of Dantz Development Corporation. Dantz, a privately held supplier of backup and recovery software for small and midsize businesses (SMB), was founded in 1984 and has a long history of delivering innovative data protection solutions.

EMC has brought together the most comprehensive portfolio of solutions and related software, platforms and services to help customers drive the highest levels of value from their information lifecycle management (ILM) strategies. According to IDC, EMC led the worldwide storage software market during the first six months of 2004 with 31.2% revenue share.* Dantz's products provide advanced technology complementary to EMC 's in disk-based backup and recovery. The addition of Dantz will help EMC further extend its reach and offer customers products that span the entire backup and recovery market, including the fast-growing SMB segment.

Dave DeWalt, Executive Vice President, EMC Software Group, said, "Dantz is a strategic acquisition in line with EMC's strategy to extend our reach and focus on the fast-growing SMB market of next-generation high-growth customers. While the majority of EMC's offerings to date have been targeted at the enterprise and commercial markets, Dantz represents EMC's first major SMB software entry with purpose-built products targeted specifically to the needs of SMB customers.

"Dantz helps EMC methodically enter the SMB software market and hit the ground running with an extremely strong and well-regarded product platform, wide-reaching and deep channels to market, and synergistic connection points with EMC's current technology and channel partnerships," continued DeWalt.

Dantz develops and markets the Retrospect product family, which protects millions of computers worldwide by providing backup and recovery for file servers, desktops, notebooks, and business-critical applications. Dantz Retrospect's advanced technology - such as its progressive backup capabilities, automated desktop and notebook backup, ease-of-use and media-independent, one-step recovery with backup to disk - allows EMC to provide customers with complementary information protection solutions ranging from entry-level to the highest enterprise requirements. Dantz's advanced technology and pioneering patents, along with EMC's leadership in disk-based backup and recovery, will form the foundation for Recovery Management , the next major wave in backup and recovery.

Dantz will continue to operate in Walnut Creek , California . Dantz's president and CEO, Larry Zulch , will report to Dave DeWalt and Mark Lewis , co-leaders of the EMC Software Group.

EMC acquired Dantz in a cash transaction valued at less than $50 million. The transaction closed on Friday, October 8, 2004 . Dantz is EMC's 15th software acquisition since the beginning of 2000.
