North Bronx Healthcare Network to Reduce Digital Medical Image Management Costs with EMC Centera

EMC Celerra NS600 Network Attached Storage Offers Additional Cost-Efficient Option

    Hopkinton, - June 09, 2003 -

EMC Corporation announced today that the North Bronx Healthcare Network (NBHN), one of six regional networks established by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, has purchased 128 terabytes of EMC Centera™ content addressed storage (CAS) to provide faster, more cost-efficient access to archived digital medical images such as X-rays, MRIs and ultrasounds. NBHN also acquired another 30 terabytes of EMC networked storage, including EMC Symmetrix® DMX for its storage area network (SAN) and EMC Celerra® NS600 for networked attached storage (NAS), as well as EMC ControlCenter™ open management software to deliver greater performance, availability and control of its growing information infrastructure.

NBHN, which consists of Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital and affiliated community healthcare centers, will manage Centera with Agfa's IMPAX® Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS). Centera will serve as the long-term repository for cardiology and radiology images, .wav and .jpg files, and other media. After images have existed for three years, NBHN will move them from its EMC Symmetrix DMX-based SAN and its EMC Celerra NS600 NAS systems to Centera.

Daniel Morreale, NBHN's Chief Information Officer, said, "Medical imaging is a huge factor in our storage growth since images use significantly more storage space than text files, and we're continually adding new types of online media. As our long-term repository has grown, our IT staff has become increasingly weighed down with the time-consuming task of loading tapes into our optical jukebox. Centera will eliminate this manual handling of tapes through automation of the search and retrieval process. We'll lower our costs and free up IT resources for other tasks. Physicians will be able to retrieve images from Centera in seconds, compared to minutes. Because we'll have a centralized view of our repository, we'll be able to eliminate redundant images and save on storage acquisition costs. Centera's content integrity and authenticity features ensure our medical images cannot be altered an essential requirement in healthcare."

NBHN will use EMC's Celerra NS600 mid-range NAS system to store and manage financial reports, Microsoft Office files, and other back-office data. The NS600 will be fully integrated with EMC's Centera and the Symmetrix SAN, which will store transaction-oriented clinical data, providing NBHN with centralized management of all types of data.

Morreale said, "EMC's multi-tiered storage offerings meet our diverse requirements across our entire storage infrastructure. EMC's NS600 NAS system, for example, is a lower-priced option that is well suited for data that we need to have available quickly, but that does not need to be accessed as continuously as data residing on our EMC SAN."

With NBHN's latest EMC purchase, the hospital network now has a 170-terabyte EMC infrastructure that supports medical records, physician order entry, Healthcare Information System (HIS), Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL, Oracle databases, PACS, and other applications. The EMC infrastructure provides centralized storage to a range of servers running IBM AIX, Windows NT, Data General UNIX, and Sun Solaris operating systems. In addition to ControlCenter, NBHN relies on EMC open management and business continuity software, such as PowerPath™ and TimeFinder™.

Morreale said, "A key objective is gaining management control over our storage, which is spread out across 100 different application servers supporting 4,000 desktop devices. Consolidating our storage onto EMC will allow us to monitor our storage utilization and anticipate storage needs for our applications. EMC's ControlCenter will allow us to boost our storage utilization from 40 to 70 percent and significantly lower our storage management costs. It will help us move toward server consolidation and reduce from 100 to 50 servers. We will cut out a lot of complexity and grow storage capacity without having to add IT staff. At the same time, we'll be able to maintain and even improve the high level of data availability our medical and administrative staff must have."
