EMC Iron Mountain and KVS Help Organizations Comply With E Mail Archiving Regulations

Trio Teams to Deliver Flexible, Integrated Solutions for Industries Affected by Increased Regulatory Requirements

Hopkinton and Boston, Mass. and Arlington, - January 28, 2003 -

In support of organizations under increasing regulatory pressure to comply with federal mandates for e-mail retention, EMC Corporation, Iron Mountain Incorporated and KVS Inc. have joined to deliver compliant e-mail archiving solutions.

Whether an organization is looking for a solution to deploy in-house or prefers to outsource its e-mail archives, EMC, KVS and Iron Mountain will address the organization's industry-specific e-mail retention requirements with a customized, integrated solution. The end-to-end e-mail archiving solutions offered by the three companies combine EMC's Centera content addressed storage (CAS) system, KVS's Enterprise Vault for Microsoft Exchange and Iron Mountain's Designated Third Party Services.

Peter Gerr, Senior Research Analyst at Enterprise Storage Group, said, "As more companies are affected by increasingly stringent e-mail retention regulations, they need help developing and maintaining compliant IT infrastructures. The integrated solutions and services announced today combine regulatory experience with technology innovation, offering organizations a compelling alternative to going it alone in achieving and maintaining compliance."

Customers choosing a joint solution from EMC, KVS and Iron Mountain can realize regulatory compliance through insourcing, outsourcing or a combination of the two. Key components of an integrated solution from the three companies include:

    • E-mail mailbox management and compliance supervision from KVS
    • Long-term e-mail archiving, indexing and Designated Third Party Services from Iron Mountain
    • Long-term, compliant online storage media from EMC Centera.

The joint solutions employ EMC Centera content addressing technology to provide online access and assured long-term content authenticity of e-mail archives. Centera's content authenticity features have prompted its industry-wide recognition as the first disk-based WORM (write once, read many) storage medium, and its self-healing capabilities ensure e-mail integrity for organizations that must retain and retrieve e-mail for extended periods of time.

Mike Hedger, Chief Executive Officer of KVS, said, "This alliance brings to market the most complete solution in support of e-mail retention practices. The unique capabilities of these products were built from the ground up in response to the business demand for intelligent life cycle management of e-mail, including the highest levels of business continuance and content integrity."

Peter Delle Donne, President of Iron Mountain Digital Archives, said, "Iron Mountain has been servicing the financial services industry as a designated third-party provider for ten years, and we continue to enhance our services to meet our customers' evolving needs, as demonstrated by our Digital Archives e-mail archiving service. Very few financial services companies have a cost-effective or easily managed solution for storing, searching and retrieving their e-mail, and they have real pain associated with satisfying SEC regulatory requirements. We've partnered with KVS and EMC to provide our customers a real-world solution from the industry leaders."

Roy Sanford, EMC's Vice President of Markets & Alliances, Content Addressed Storage, added, "Secure, reliable e-mail retention and retrieval has become a top priority for institutions across nearly every industry. The joint solutions from KVS, Iron Mountain and EMC take full advantage of Centera's content authentication and self-healing features, offering customers unmatched e-mail integrity and fast, online retrieval."
