EMC Sponsors The Leary Firefighters Foundatio Celebrity Hat Trick for Third Year

Event to Raise Funds for Worcester Firefighters Local 1009 Equipment Fund; Fundraising Goal Set at $400,000

    Hopkinton, - September 26, 2002 -

EMC Corporation returns this weekend as the title sponsor of The Leary Firefighters Foundation's third annual fundraising event, The Celebrity Hat Trick. The events take place on Sunday, September 29, and Monday, September 30, in Worcester, Massachusetts. As a result of the past two years' fundraising efforts, Denis Leary, President of The Leary Firefighters Foundation, has donated $750,000 to the Worcester Firefighters Local 1009 Equipment Fund.

Today, a state-of-the-art fire and burn tower training facility stands on the land directly behind the Worcester Fire Headquarters. The training facility, built with money raised through the first two Celebrity Hat Trick events, provides training for the 60 fire departments in Worcester County. This year's fundraising goal is $400,000.

In the wake of the events of September 11, 2001, the Foundation expanded its mission to direct money to the 343 families of the New York City firefighters who fell in the line of duty. To date, The Leary Firefighters Foundation for New York's Bravest has raised and distributed $1.2 million to the families of these firefighters, including an additional $250,000 donated by EMC Corporation.

"It is imperative that we ensure our firefighters have the proper resources for any situation," said Leary. "Through EMC's continued and generous support, we have already been able to build vital training facilities for local fire departments. Massachusetts firefighters put themselves at risk every day, they should be provided with the best we have to offer."

Bill Teuber, EMC Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, said, "EMC is pleased to lend its support to a foundation that not only acknowledges the sacrifices made by firefighters and their families, but provides improved technology, equipment and training for firefighters in Worcester and throughout Central Massachusetts. Denis Leary's unwavering commitment to the improvement of training and safety for our local and national firefighters is a goal that EMC is proud to salute and support."

As one of the largest employers in Massachusetts, EMC has a long-standing commitment to investing in the local communities, especially those organizations and charities that strengthen public safety and education. EMC also supports programs to improve math and science education, organizations that work with children and families, and programs that promote diversity. EMC is committed to being an involved corporate citizen and thoughtful neighbor in its local and global communities.

The Celebrity Hat Trick hockey game, featuring celebrities Sean Penn, Rick Moranis, Scott Wolf, Bobby Farrelly and Tim Robbins, versus the Bruins Alumni, featuring John Bucyk and Phil Esposito, takes place on Sunday, September 29, at 3:00 p.m., at Worcester's Centrum Centre.
