    EMC Announces Election of Gail Deegan to Board of Directors

    Former Houghton Mifflin Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Brings Accomplished Record of Financial Management

    Hopkinton, - July 15, 2002 -

    EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage, today announced the election of Gail Deegan to its Board of Directors. As the former Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Houghton Mifflin Company, Ms. Deegan brings a breadth of financial management and corporate governance experience to the EMC Board of Directors. She has been appointed to the Board's Audit Committee. Ms. Deegan fills a vacant seat on EMC's Board, which will now comprise eight members, with one additional vacancy remaining.

She has distinguished herself as a CFO at three companies in distinctly different industries, has considerable experience as a board member, and promises to be a very valuable addition to EMC."

    Ms. Deegan, 55, served as Chief Financial Officer of Houghton Mifflin, a leading publisher of textbooks, reference books and other materials, from 1996 until 2001, when the company was acquired by Vivendi Universal. Prior to her tenure as CFO, Ms. Deegan had been a member of Houghton Mifflin's Board of Directors from 1989 until 1996. From 1991 until 1996, Ms. Deegan was with NYNEX, first as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of New England Telephone and later as Senior Vice President of Regulatory and Government Affairs for NYNEX New England. Ms. Deegan began her business career in financial administration at Eastern Enterprises, the parent company of Boston Gas, where she was eventually appointed Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer.

    Ms. Deegan currently serves on several boards, both commercial and civic, including the TJX Companies, Inc., Simmons College, the United Way of Massachusetts Bay, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and the Patriot's Trail Girl Scout Council. Previously, she served on the boards of Houghton Mifflin Company, Hartford Life, Inc., and EG&G. She currently serves on the audit committee of the board of the TJX Companies, Inc., and has previously served on the audit committees of the boards of Houghton Mifflin, Hartford Life, Inc., and EG&G. Ms. Deegan is currently Executive in Residence at both Simmons College School of Management and Babson College.

    Ms. Deegan holds an MBA from Simmons College School of Management, a master's degree in History from Ohio State University, and a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from The College of Saint Rose. She also received an Honorary Doctorate of Engineering Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology. She has received the Simmons College School of Management Award for Excellence in Management, the New England Council Leadership Award to Women in Business, and has been honored by the New York City YWCA's Academy of Women Achievers and the Director's Research Council.
