CMGI and EMC Form Broad Reaching Alliance

Relationship to Enable Technology and Marketing Collaboration between EMC and AltaVista, NaviSite and Tallan

    Hopkinton and Andover, - December 18, 2000 -

Two of the world's leading technology solutions companies -- EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage, and CMGI, Inc., a leading global Internet operating and development company -- today announced an intention to enter into a series of cooperative initiatives between EMC and several CMGI majority-owned companies that provides for integration of the companies' respective search software and storage technologies. In addition, EMC intends to extend preferred provider status to select CMGI subsidiaries focused on the delivery and development of Internet technology and services for the enterprise.

The alliance between EMC and CMGI will include majority-owned subsidiaries AltaVista, which licenses its patented search technology and powers more than 1,000 of the world's leading e-commerce firms, portals and enterprises; Tallan, which provides business-critical applications strategy, design, development and implementation services for Fortune 500 companies and leading online firms; and, NaviSite, a leading managed application hosting provider for enterprises, ISVs and dot.com's deploying business-critical applications on the Internet.

Specifically, AltaVista and EMC will work together through EMC's E-Infostructure Developers Program to integrate AltaVista's patented search software and APIs with EMC's leading Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems and software. Joint product development efforts between the two companies are already underway. The relationship will also involve AltaVista technology acquisitions by EMC.

NaviSite is currently a member of EMC's xSperience Provider Program and offers managed storage services based on EMC solutions to deliver a managed Storage Area Network (SAN) service designed specifically for customers' data storage needs. EMC has already introduced a significant number of customers to NaviSite, enabling the company to close a number of major contracts since initiating their relationship in September 2000.

"Consistent with the business model transitions we're now seeing within CMGI toward enterprise-derived revenue, our corporate eye is aggressively focused on leveraging strategic partnerships with industry leaders like EMC that support our operating companies and their goals to create Internet solutions for Global 2000 businesses," said David Wetherell, chairman and chief executive officer, CMGI, Inc. "Led by our Strategic Partnership Group, this relationship with the recognized leader in storage systems and software is the first of many world-class introductions that CMGI intends to make for the benefit of its operating companies."

Joe Tucci, EMC's President and Chief Operating Officer, added, "There will be more information created in the next three years than the last 40 thousand combined. More than 90 percent of that information is now born digital. By integrating technologies and working closely with CMGI and its companies, EMC can help customers be better prepared for this content big bang."
