GE Medical Systems and EMC Join Forces New Healthcare Information Services to Enhance Patient Care

GE ASP Solution to Help Increase Healthcare Productivity, Decrease Costs, Minimize Technology Risk

    Hopkinton, - June 26, 2000 -

EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage, and GE Medical Systems, a global leader in medical imaging and information technologies (NYSE: GE), today announced that they have teamed to deploy a fast, scalable, and highly reliable medical information archiving solution for GE’s new Application Service Provider (ASP) business. This is the first step in a tight alliance between these two industry leaders.

The GE ASP solution is the first-of-its-kind to offer medical image archiving and Web-based distribution from mission-critical data centers using advanced information technologies. GE has selected EMC as the information infrastructure provider for the solution, which facilitates the flow of medical information digitally throughout the extended healthcare enterprise. With customer deployments scheduled for this month, GE Medical Systems will host, manage, and deliver healthcare applications on a cost-per-use basis, via secured Internet networks.

“Every healthcare system around the world is under enormous pressure to create greater efficiencies and reduce costs,” said Jeff Immelt, President and CEO of GE Medical Systems. “Our new ASP solution will offer remote image archiving to healthcare providers in a cost-effective manner, helping them migrate to a digital environment. As part of this alliance, we will combine GE’s healthcare expertise with EMC’s state-of-the-art information storage technologies to offer advanced ASP solutions to the healthcare industry.”

“To meet the ever-increasing complexities of today’s healthcare market, providers are looking for information solutions which can help improve productivity, lower costs and minimize risk,” said Greg Lucier, Vice President of Global Services for GE Medical Systems. “Moreover, they are seeking these solutions from trusted and experienced leaders like GE and EMC. The GE ASP solution will change the way clinical applications are delivered today and demonstrates our continued investment in information technologies in order to meet the challenges of the marketplace.”

GE Medical Systems is a member of the EMC Proven E-Infostructure program, a joint marketing and certification program that identifies companies that have built their businesses on world-class EMC information infrastructures. “This alliance between GE Medical Systems and EMC represents a powerful combination and a major step forward in the offering of advanced ASP services to the healthcare market,” said Joe Tucci, EMC’s President and Chief Operating Officer. “GE Medical Systems will deploy EMC’s E-Infostructure to ensure a first-to-market advantage in the ASP healthcare market and provide a foundation for rapid growth and ultimate protection of its customers’ data and applications.”

Expanding the alliance, GE and EMC plan to work on tightly integrated product development efforts as well as on the integration of GE into EMC’s recently announced ECOstructure (EMC/Cisco/Oracle Infrastructure) initiative. The ECOstructure alliance is designed to integrate advanced technologies and provide the tools necessary to simplify, accelerate and improve the implementation of highly available e-business infrastructures. GE Medical Systems has selected Cisco and Oracle as key infrastructure technologies for its ASP solution. Most recently, GE was named "E-Business Of The Year" in the first annual "InternetWeek 100" survey conducted by InternetWeek, the leading Internet/IT publication.
