Gelco Taps EMC to Launch Aggressive Expansion into B2B E Commerce

EMC Proven E-Infostructure Enables More Rapid, Efficient Movement of Customer Data

    Hopkinton, - May 24, 2000 -

EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage, today announced that Gelco Information Network (www.gelco.com), a leading supplier of solutions for travel expense and trade promotion management, has built an EMC Enterprise Storage Network (ESN) to help establish Gelco as a major provider of business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce.

“B2B e-commerce is defined by its ability to deliver critical information and services to business, anywhere, anytime,” said Larry Peterson, Vice President of Technical Services for Gelco. “Basing our infrastructure on an EMC Enterprise Storage Network places us in a perfect spot to evolve our product offerings and take advantage of the vast opportunities being created by the B2B marketplace.”

“With ESN, we have consolidated the management of our vast and growing information resources. Our databases and analytical tools are more readily available to our customers. Our customers are able to more accurately identify trends and make better-informed strategic business decisions. And we now deliver our customer services much more efficiently because we manage our constantly changing distribution of data across the enterprise from a central point.”

ESN comprises a dedicated, high-speed network that uses standard network-attached storage capabilities, such as IP, and standard channel technology, such as Fibre Channel, SCSI and ESCON, to weave together heterogeneous storage devices, switches, hubs and servers into a single, easily managed, centralized information infrastructure. ESN consolidates distributed information from departments and business units throughout the enterprise, as well as from remote locations, over wide-area networks.

Gelco, based in Eden Prairie, Minn., relies on an ESN built around an EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage system attached to an EMC Connectrix Enterprise Storage Network system to provide greater and more flexible connectivity options to its Compaq NT and Sun Solaris servers. The ESN supports all of Gelco’s applications, including data marts, data warehouse, travel expense management, and trade promotion. EMC’s team of Professional Services consultants worked closely with Gelco to speed the design, testing and implementation of the ESN.

Gelco has qualified under the EMC Proven E-Infostructure program, which enables selected Internet-focused companies to publicly validate their world-class information infrastructures. This program defines the highest standards for information availability, scalability and management. EMC Proven members have implemented the necessary enterprise storage resources to operate at peak efficiency, adapt to a constantly changing business climate and easily manage Internet-driven growth.

Peterson commented, “EMC’s intelligent software is absolutely essential to meeting our strategic objectives in the B2B market. For example, EMC TimeFinder software allows us to create backup copies of our data warehouses even as customers are accessing them. EMC ControlCenter lets us watch and actually manage all ESN elements and quickly identify and correct trouble spots before they grow out of control.”

Gelco also has implemented numerous other EMC software solutions to achieve the highest levels of performance and simplify management of escalating volumes of data. EMC PowerPath software enables Gelco to automatically balance information loads across all available server paths and reroute data if a server path is corrupted. EMC Volume Logix software manages the allocation of shared storage and volume access control across Gelco’s growing environment of servers and storage systems. Gelco also utilizes EMC Symmetrix Optimizer to transparently reconfigure physical drives.

“Gelco has continuously moved the travel expense and trade promotion markets forward by marrying leading-edge technology and best business practices with its financial services expertise,” said Mike Ruffolo, EMC’s Executive Vice President of Global Sales, Services and Marketing. “To fast-forward their rise to leadership in the B2B market, Gelco has chosen EMC ESN as the foundation of their fault-tolerant, fully redundant and highly scalable information infrastructure.”
